Early Progression Guide

The early-game problem

Many launch reviews describe the same opening: a starter unit that melts on early waves, almost no gold, class-restricted drops, and a fear that the account is soft-locked. Whether those issues are balance, bugs, or onboarding gaps, your response should be systematic. This guide focuses on decisions that still help when numbers feel hostile—and on knowing when the problem is a patch issue instead of your party.

If you have not learned the menus yet, start with How to Play. If a specific Gunner wall is the issue, keep Beat Early Waves and the Gunner Guide open beside this page. For chest/EXP/stuck/soft-ban symptoms, go straight to Troubleshooting and Patch Notes.

Know the four free classes by name

Official free base classes:

  • Templar Knight — Sigil frontline defender
  • Priest — Prayer recovery and rescue
  • Witch — Full Cast backline damage
  • Gunner — ranged mark-and-eliminate damage

Build early progress around those four before you open Pirate or Overlord DLC pages. Practical trios live on Party Builds; rankings with patch context live on the Tier List.

Progression checklist for the first hours

  1. Confirm the client is actually farming — Minimized is fine; fully closed is not. Offline rewards exist, but a stuck map will not invent loot.
  2. Identify your bottleneck — Damage, survivability, inventory space, missing unlocks, or a bug (chests/EXP/stuck).
  3. Stop panic-selling every drop — You need duplicates for the nine-copy tier rule in Stack Items.
  4. Equip only what your current heroes can use — Class locks waste optimism across eight equipment slots.
  5. Plan the path to a three-hero party — See Party Builds and the Party Planner.
  6. Update through v1.0.2-era fixes — Read Patch Notes before you assume the build is doomed.

Gold is a pacing tool, not a score

When monster gold feels nonexistent, every purchase must move a constraint. Prefer upgrades that raise clear speed or reduce deaths over cosmetic inventory clutter. If storage fills before your damage does, read Storage Pack and the free habits in the Items hub before you spend real money.

XP, chests, soft bans, and reward sanity checks

Some players reported looping the first map with no XP or item pickup, chests that would not open, or maps that stuck. v1.0.2 targeted those progression freezes and also addressed soft bans caused by overly strict anti-cheat timezone mismatches. Before you invent a ten-step exploit:

  • Update Steam files / verify integrity
  • Restart the client after a failed reward streak
  • Check whether you are looking at a class-locked item rather than “no drops”
  • Compare symptoms with Troubleshooting and the notes in Patch Notes
  • Compare your experience with launch reports summarized in the Honest Review

If rewards remain zero across a clean restart on a patched build, treat it as a bug report candidate rather than a skill issue.

Reset button caution

Settings includes a Reset button added in v1.0.1. Changing character means starting over. Do not Reset to “fix” a temporary wall or to activate DLC. If a 1.0.1 reset broke rewards, the emergency note was to press Reset again—then return to normal stacking. Details: How to Play and Troubleshooting.

Upgrade order that usually wastes less time

  • Weapon and core defensive slots for the active clearer (Witch or Gunner)
  • Stack progress on items you will still wear in two hours
  • Templar Knight and Priest pieces that stop wipe loops
  • Party slot unlocks when the cost is reachable without bankrupting gear upgrades
  • Speculative DLC classes only after the free loop is understood (DLC Overview, Pirate & Overlord)

Remember Gunner’s v1.0.1 accuracy fix and the reduced difficulty on stages 1-1 to 1-3 when you judge early clear speed. Random skills can outshine raw rarity—details in Random Skills.

When to push maps versus farm

Push when clears are stable and chests still appear. Farm when deaths erase idle time or when you are one or two stacks from a tier-up that changes DPS. The Stack Calculator helps you see whether you are “almost there” or wishing. Steam Market trading remains indefinitely postponed, so farming and synthesizing remain the real economy.

UI friction is progression friction

High-DPI users who cannot read menus will mis-equip and mis-sell. Fix presentation via Taskbar Setup and Controls before blaming the build. A readable inventory is an early-game upgrade.

Mindset after a Very Negative launch score

Steam’s early score does not mean your account is doomed, but it does mean you should avoid sunk-cost spirals. Set a two-session evaluation rule: if basic reward loops still fail after setup fixes and patch checks, park the game and revisit after more updates. For the buy/play decision framework, use Worth Playing.

Bridge to mid-game habits

Once early waves stabilize:

  • Maintain a stacking queue instead of a hoarder dump
  • Rebuild the party around Templar Knight, Priest, Witch, and Gunner roles—not random collection
  • Track which DLC, if any, removes a real constraint
  • Keep using the Guides hub and Classes hub so each new wall has a matching article
  • Re-check Patch Notes when something that used to work suddenly stops

Early progression in Task Bar of Ragnalis is about protecting momentum. Stabilize farming, stack with intention, expand the party on purpose, separate bugs from balance, and only then chase optimization rabbit holes.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Which free classes should I plan around?

Templar Knight, Priest, Witch, and Gunner. See [Party Builds](/classes/party-builds/) for F2P trio examples.

Why is my Gunner stuck so early?

Soft damage, class locks, or pre-fix accuracy issues are common. Follow [Beat Early Waves](/guides/beat-early-waves/), the [Gunner Guide](/classes/gunner/), and [Patch Notes](/updates/patch-notes/).

What if I gain no XP or items at all?

Verify game files, keep the client running, and treat persistent zero rewards as a possible bug—v1.0.2 targeted chests/EXP/stuck issues. Use [Troubleshooting](/guides/troubleshooting/).

When should I buy DLC during early game?

After the free loop works. Evaluate packs with the [DLC Cost Checker](/tools/dlc-cost/) and [Pirate & Overlord](/dlc/pirate-overlord/) pages.
